Cambodge - Sihanoukville

The Beach... GREAT- shame about the rain!

We arrived in Sihanoukville and found a nice area to base ourselves. The town is quite spread out and so we expected to get out and about renting motorbikes...My fear of the motor was dwindling finally, maybe due to the improvements to Clements driving!

The problem was that the rainy season had really REALLY started now and the rain just did not give in. We tried to go for walks to explore but getting drenched through within 2 minutes of exposure is not that much fun.

One afternoon we managed to rent a motorbike and I DROVE IT!!! I did quite well to, once I got used to the fact that the throttle was the handle I was fine (a minor detail I forgot the last time I tried). And so we went to discover the beaches under the thick cloud cover and regrettably we didn't have our swimming stuff with us as there were many people swimming.

The beaches were lovely white sand and we were just astonished at how little development there is around them. Land is for sale everywhere and after speaking to a local Frenchman a plot of land was being sold for 2500 quid and it was massive, with a sea view too!! We were getting our "how to make money quick" heads on, and we still think we might come back one day with a pot of cash to spend!

After enough rain to last us the rest of the trip we left Sihanoukville for Kampot in a "shared taxi"...

This "shared" business actually meant me AND Clement sat on the front passenger seat along with the driver and another lady in the drivers seat. In the back there were 4 more adults and 2 children and in the boot there were upto 4 more adults and our bags.

Thankfully after an hour sat very uncomfortably (clement loved it!) we swapped cars and waited for that one to get "filled" up too. We got the back seat this time and eventually there were 4 adults and 2 children on the back seat, )the same in front) I had a little girl sat on my knee- needless to say my bum was numb to the point of almost no return by the time we got out 2 hours later.

Kampot was a small place and we took the first guest house we found. We almost started a fight between 2 motorbike guides who were so desperate to take us somewhere for very cheap and eventually we went to visit some local caves.

I was not expecting EXTREME CAVING by candle light, at one point having to work my body through something resembling a hole, pitch black on the other side! After that I was not up for another one and we asked the guide kindly to take us home- we were gagging for drinks!

The guide (knowing he was going to tell us we had to pay double the original price) tried to take us to many other things along the way and we had to almost beg him to "Please take us home"- three on a motorbike might I add (see the pickies and you'll understand!)

It was an adventure all the same we decided to get a bike ourselves the day after and visit Kep sur mer another seaside place. It turned out to be a bit like a ghost town with old french mansions derelict and run down although lived in by locals. What a waste.

Phnom Penh was calling us....
