Laos - Luang Nam Tha

Anyone for bat...? rat...? dog???

Crossing the Mekong River over to Laos I waited with anticipation as to what we would discover there. We found they weren't immune to ticket touting as one tried to tell us that they would not sell bus tickets at the bus station- we decided to find out for ourselves.

The bus was a throw-back from the 60's and was in a decrepid state- it's strange how reassured you are when you see other "travellers" waiting for that same bus! The road was also in a similar state as the bus, we had to wait for the machinary to move out of the way for us to get through on what was no more than a mud track.

The scenery however was amazing, passing through tiny villages made out of straw, waving at young children playing with nothing in particular, and women washing in the sole water pipe for the village.

At a drop off point in one of the larger villages children came upto the bus to sell food that turned out to be bbq'd bat! A lady behind bought a handfull and the smell of meat lingered for the rest of the journey.

We arrived on Luang Nam Tha very tired and very hungry and for the first time decided to go for the nearest guest house. We met a couple of nice people doing a similar thing to us and we keep bumping into them everywhere now- funny how we know more people here than in a village back home.

The markets are very interesting. On sale: bbq'd BAT, RAT, DOGS, FROGS, (alive might I add) and squirrel to name a few. It was tricky to look appetised by these goodies! Plus the whole market was staring at us!

We rented another motor bike to give us the chance to get out, and we found a great village and waterfall. We decided to move on after that as it was a one road village, but big for here.
