Vietnam - Hanoi

Northern Vietnam, northern people too

After enduring another long night on a night bus, the constant beeping of the horn we were very tired and ready to get in bed. The bus dropped us off 16 km away from the town, and to our surprise there were taxi drivers there waiting for us. We could see another scam unfolding before our eyes. A lady knidly informed us that because we were very very late arriving we were not allowed to enter the town by bus and if we stayed in their hotel we wouldn't have to pay for the taxi. Of course this had all been pre-arranged and so we decided to jump in the taxi anyway, and not take their room no matter how nice it was and not pay for their taxi either.

Due to the large amount of French people visiting Vietnam there was a large amount of people to rekon with and so in the end we won and found a hotel else where, not paying for anything- needless to say the good old Brits took their room!

Hanoi itself is quite a nice town, although the people are more used to or more harsh with toursists. We visited the resting place of Ho Chi Minh- the Great Communist Leader. Under heavy security we had a sneaky peak at him, in his embalmed state it was very strange to see.

We also did a 3 day tour of Halong bay which was great and it seemed that we had a lot of luck with the weather as it was sunny the whole 3 days. We visted some very touristic caves, and spent many hours cruising around the lovely islands with green sea all around. We weren't able to swim though as there were huge great jelly fish everywhere so that was a bit of a shame.

We made friends with some French Canadians too, Remy, Sarah and Racheal and we had a good laugh, I certainly made progress with my French too.

And then back to Hanoi where we visited even more shops on the hunt for matching hand bag and shall to go with my tailor made dress from Hoi An and then we took a night train to Sapa, the northen town in the hills...
